Every person has a story. Within the labyrinth of these stories lie meanings of life that are sometimes forgotten or transformed into something unrecognizable. These meanings need to be put into words. They need to be heard so that, through the back-and-forth between therapist and client, they can be carved out of hidden suffering and emotions. The therapy room is an equal, human-to-human relationship. The therapist does not see themselves as separate from, or superior to, the client. Instead, they believe that the client is the true expert of their own world, while the therapist acts as a facilitator of awareness and change—much like an empathetic traveling companion. In these sessions, the client’s narrative of themselves, their world, and their relationships is heard. With a unique presence and empathy, the therapist helps the client face their pains and vulnerabilities, increasing their capacity to tolerate ambiguity and confront suffering. Ultimately, from the heart of that pain, meanings and stories are transformed, and a new narrative is born.
